Drawing In: Number 2
A round up of short thoughts and ideas for the weekend
Parlour
I came down with a cold last Friday evening and the girls both ended up with activities outside the home on Saturday evening so instead of Craft and Hobby night, the boys and I watched Jaws. I hadn’t watched it since my teens and the 15b needed to watch it for his English class. Ummm ….
special effects are really different now! I’m not sure I would say better, just different
what filmmakers would show on screen has changed a LOT- in some ways this was gorier and in some ways not than a modern film
I had forgotten how ordinary most of the characters are - not particularly good looking or capable, just regular people trying to make their lives work
people smoke and drink and it’s just normal
refreshing not to have lots of sexual activity or cussing in a film
This weekend - we may watch Back to the Future also assigned for this class the 15b is taking.
Saturday during the day the little kids and I are going to a historical reenactment so we’ll see what energy levels are like when we get back.
Kitchen
Yesterday ended up being a scramble so I sent the 15b to the farmers market instead of going myself. He brought back tomatoes and cucumbers which I had requested and about 20lbs of eggplant! I had said, “anything else that looks good and you can think of me cooking (I don’t do exotic things)” and I guess he’s been craving eggplant so here we are. As this photo shows it’s been one of his favourites since he was small!
Pasta Fazool tonight which is good as I have running to do in the afternoon and that’s a crockpot dish. I’ll cook most of the rest of the eggplant and freeze for pasta sauce another day.
Sunday dinner is Roast Chicken this week. The grocery has some nice sweet potatoes so I’ll cook those too.
Yard
Nothing happened there last weekend. This weekend we’re picking up a rabbit hutch for a Flemish Giant doe as my 17g sold her Mini-Rex buck and now has a 20lb doe instead. We’ll spend some time out there on Sunday making a tidy space for Hestia and cleaning up a bit of junk.
Reading
15b brought home a Dame Frevisse mystery by Margaret Frazer the other day and I read it while I was sick. Reading my way through the series now and have added Margaret Frazer to my “Mystery Authors I read and reread because their portrayal of humanity is so good” list (also Sayers, Marsh, and Ellis Peters).
Frazer does a superb job of portraying 14th century life in England and an even better job of describing the interior life of a Benedictine nun. Dame Frevisse wrestles with her vocation, chooses poorly at times, tries to work on her own faith instead of being annoyed by the her unchosen companions in the priory and so on. Like Ellis Peters in the Brother Cadfael mysteries the murder often doesn’t happen until almost halfway through the book and like Peters, Frazer spends time she does not need to on faith and life and their sometimes (often) difficult interaction.
Rest
Definitely taking a nap and some time to sit quietly - hopefully outdoors.
Music
Still listening to lots of Scottish Folk and as a switch from that choral music by John Rutter!
